But well-groomed trails and warming huts don't account for Craftsbury's charm, and to picture it as a typical ski resort is to totally miss the point. This is no golf-course ski mecca with trails through manicured woods. | Virginia Meissner Sno-Park is an easy 20-minute drive west of Bend. Ski club volunteers groom more than 10 miles of track and maintain shelters along ski trails mostly suited to beginners. The terrain is mostly gentle, but there is a hilly loop that rewards skiers with tremendous views of Tumalo Mountain, Mount Bachelor, and the Three Sisters. The trails connect to popular ungroomed trails in the Swampy Lakes system to the west. The sno-park, opened in 1990, is named in memory of Virginia Meissner, an energetic ski instructor and tour leader. One of her passions, wildflowers, inspired many of the area's trail names. The Central Oregon chapter of the Oregon Nordic Club helped develop the ski trails and initiated occasional trail grooming. The new Tumalo Langlauf ONC chapter expanded the grooming program. Trails are usually groomed on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Tracks set for classic skiing are excellent. Four miles are groomed doublewide for skating. If conditions permit, other trails are groomed as well. This program is dependent upon volunteers and donations. Look for the donation box at the trailhead. One of Oregon's best cross country ski trails, Virginia Meissner is located near Bend, OR. Trails' printable online topo maps offer shaded and un-shaded reliefs, and aerial photos too! Use topographic map functionality to find elevation, print high resolution maps, save a PNG, or just learn the topography around Virginia Meissner. You can also get free latitude and longitude coordinates from the topographical map and set your GPS.
